USA’s Olympic Baseball Team Earns Right to Play in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The Americans won the Olympic gold medal in the year 2000, but didn’t succeed to qualify for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. This year the United States of America’s Olympic Baseball Team earned the right to participate in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by beating Panama 11 - 5 on Sunday night. Cuba also qualified for the Olympics after winning the game against Mexico 4 - 0. Both qualified teams will play against each other next Tuesday. The U.S. record stands at 5-1 in the tournament, while Cuba is 6-0. Tuesday marks the final game for both teams.

During the U.S. - Panama game, Bobby Hill had three hits with an RBI (Run Batted In) and scored twice for the USA’s team, which fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but scored 10 runs over the next four frames. Michael Bourn and Billy Butler had two runs each one for the U.S. and two RBIs. Michael Bourn tripled in two runs in the bottom of the second inning letting USA’s score ahead of its opponent’s and then knocked out Panama starter Elpidio Pinto by scoring three times in the third.

Greg Smith allowed one run, struck out five and walked two in 3 1/3 innings for the United States. Nic Ungs tossed the next 3 2/3 frames for the win.

Baseball is the first sport in which Americans have earned a spot in the 2008 Olympics. Baseball game’s inventors and the champions of the 2000 Sydney Olympics missed the 2004 Olympics as they didn’t get to qualify at the Americas Qualifier.

Is the Home Run Derby Pushing the MLB in Another Direction?

“Last Loose Ends Of The So Called “Steroid Era”.

Written by Ally White

For some the Home Run Derby might be an event meant for the people to enjoy themselves in wholesome fun. For others it might be one of the last loose ends of the so called “steroid era” in Major League Baseball. If you really analyze it, it could have a little bit of both. And for some it just is a But it is the manifestation of the time when baseball’s obsession with the home runs became damaging.

From the way some of us see it there might be some problems with the Derby as it is currently constituted. For some the main problem with the Derby now is that the whole event should be over in about 45 minutes, before it became a mini-series, it was a lot more fun.

Another problem is that the Derby grew in popularity about the same time the use of performance-enhancing substances did. The reaction from a portion of the baseball public to these related developments has completely dual. People ask the players not to take the terrible steroids, but still they are hungry and eager for the player to hit that baseball further and further. I personally do not see it as a coincidence that five former Derby winners have been implicated in steroid usage and these five have been convicted.

Right now with the situations the MLB is going trough and it would do well to put as much distance as possible between itself and the events that involve no skills but extraordinary strength. The Derby is a push in the other direction. And that is not said to cast any doubt upon the integrity of the current participants. We could even harshly qualify it as a constant reminder of how the game of baseball and the MLB started with the drug use trouble.

ESPN Rally Monkey Missing In Action

Where Oh Where Did the ESPN Rally Monkey Go?

rally-monkey.gif

There’s a cute little video over at NESW Sports that you have to check out. Well it gave me a bit of a chuckle anyways!

I’m probably partial to the video because the rally monkey is wearing an LA Angel’s shirt and my two oldest boys play baseball both play for the Angels in different divisions of our Little League. Also, this upcoming week are the final games that will decide who goes to playoffs and bracket place and Tournament of Champions. “Believe in the power of the rally monkey!”

Here’s a bit of the excerpt preluding it:

ESPN SportsCenter Commercial, Rally Monkey Gets Fired

ESPN SportsCenter Commercial, Rally Monkey Gets Fired. Sad thing happen during economic troubles. Purse strings get tight. Primates can not keep their jobs. The jobs always go to humans. I feel so sorry for……for the rest of this and the video, please visit www.NeswSports.com.

Not So Perfect Angel? GA Gets Tossed From Angels Game

Garret Anderson thrown out for arguing balls and strikes.

garret-anderson.jpg

During today’s LA Angels game against the Baltimore Orioles, left fielder Garret Anderson was kicked out during the seventh inning. Home plate umpire Paul Emmel made the call after Anderson argued with him for calling a third strike against him. As he walked towards the Angels’ dugout, Anderson tossed his bat into the air in frustration, prompting Emmel to give the slugger the “heave-ho.”

LA Angels manager Mike Scioscia then argued with the home plate umpire regarding the ump’s decision, claiming that his hitter was a bit frustrated, and shouldn’t have been tossed in the first place. And it’s easy to see why Scioscia could feel that way - with only two homeruns and 11 RBI’s in 15 games, his star player Anderson is batting a lackluster .218 this season with the Angels.

Scioscia went to bat for him and said, “Garret’s trying. He’s searching. I think he’s made some strides in the batter’s box. This guy wants to compete, wants to achieve. He’s searching right now but he’ll find it.” This is only the third time during the past fourteen years that Garret Anderson has been thrown out of a game.

Juan Rivera replaced Anderson in the 8th inning out in Left Field as well as sixth in the batting order. The Angels came out on top against the Orioles 3 to 1.

Sports Gossip:

Living in  the exclusive So Cal Gated Community of Shady Canyon in Irvine, Garret Anderson can often be spotted dining out with his wife at Mitsui Japanese Restaurant in the Quail Hill Village Center.

Alyssa Milano’s MLB Line of Sportswear Apparel

alyssa-milano-mlb.jpg

Alyssa Milano has her own line of MLB sportswear apparel - who knew? (Well, I didn’t until just a few minutes ago!).

I was browsing the online MLB store and I came across Milano’s line of MLB fashion sportswear. Wow, was I impressed. Milano has numerous styles to choose from ranging from sporty to glamour! This hot chick certainly found a really cool niche to get herself into in the world of fashion.

The fashion line has been available since Spring, 2007. I’m still in shock, every year my Mom and I support my sons and their baseball teams by trying to wear something that represents their team. Most sporting good stores as you know selling sportswear memorabilia have such boring styles of t-shirts and tees, most of which are unflattering to a chick’s silhouette.

Pardon this old news if you will, but perhaps there are some hot chicks out there like myself who have been clueless about Milano’s adorable sports team apparel line for women!!

I chose to show two of Milano’s sportswear apparel representing my favorite So Cal team (not to mention the name of two of my boys’ Little League teams) the LA Angels!

I’m sure all you guys out there will appreciate her line as well - I know my boyfriend sure can’t wait to see me rockin’ one of her cool outfits with some sexy stilettos to pair up with! (Yes - even at Little League games or Major League games - I’m sporting the stilettos!)

alyssa-milano-mlb-wear2.jpg

Sport Tidbits:

Alyssa Milano’s fashion sportswear line is called TouchTM. The sports clothing line has also extended into a brand of jewelry which launched at the end of Summer, 2007. Very Cool!

Bill Buckner Receives 4 Minute Ovation from Red Sox Fans

billbuckner2008.jpg

Bill Buckner receives a four minute ovation from the sold out Fenway Park fans at the Boston Red Sox home game opener.

bill-buckner1986.jpg

Rewind to 1986, the year the Boston Red Sox had the chance to break “The Curse of The Bambino”. A dribbler was hit to first base and Bill Buckner missed the ball and ended up costing the Red Sox the World Series. The City of Boston was ruthless and Buckner became in a sense a hated man. The media ripped him to shreds, and Buckner even began receiving death threats.

Buckner basically went into hiding from all of the abuse he received for what many viewed as his fault for that losing day. He left Boston in 1987 to play for the California Angels. Buckner then went on to play for the Kansas City Royals in 1988. The first baseman came back to play for the Red Sox in 1990, but he was still so damaged emotionally, he could really never get his mental game back and his last game was May 30th, 1990. He moved his family across the country to an Idaho ranch and became a real estate investor and name his first housing subdivision, Fenway Park.

Today at the Red Sox home game opener and Bill Buckner was invited to throw out the first pitch. In an emotional interview with the media shown on ESPN tonight, Buckner said, “I really had to forgive not the fans of Boston per se, but I would have to say, in my heart, I had to forgive the media for what they put me and my family through. So I’ve done that. I’m over that. And I’m just happy that I just try to think of the positive. The happy things.”

The story really tugged at this SoCalSportsChick’s heart strings because missing a ball like that could’ve happened to any Major League ballplayer. Buckner could have had a long standing career in Major League baseball and it is just so very sad that his future as a ballplayer was cut short due to spiteful people and the way the public often treats celebrities or sports players when they make a mistake.

______________________________________________

Tonight’s game also had The Red Sox receiving their 2007 World Series rings which was their second world series rings in just four years. They went on to play their first home game at Fenway Park against the Detroit Tigers. Victory prevailed as the Red Sox beat the Tigers 5 to 0!

Sport Tidbits:

“Curse of The Bambino”
In 1918, the Red Sox won their 5th World Series title. Babe Ruth led the way to success. In 1920, the Red Sox traded Ruth to the New York Yankees, who by the way had never won the title. The Yankees went on to win 26 World Titles and are now a world-renowned team of any sport.

It would be an astonishing 86 years later that the Boston Red Sox would win a World Series Title against the Saint Louis Cardinals and so the “The Curse of The Bambino” was lifted. To this day, many fans believe the Lunar Eclipse that hung over the ballpark that winning night attributed to the win and several other fans believe it was Babe Ruth hovering from the heavens and releasing the Red Sox of the curse.

MLB Trade Rumors Abound About Francisco Rodriguez

210px-krod-fenway.jpgCould the MLB Trade rumors be true that that LA Angels might trade relief pitcher, Francisco Rodriguez?

Back in February, Rodriguez was not offered his requested 12.5 Million dollar salary but rather only was offered $10 Million to continue to playing for the Los Angeles Angels. The negotiations had the closer seeking a long-term contract for the first time with the Angels. Previous years had Rodriguez only signing one year contracts even though he was offered longer ones.

Perhaps the offer may have been a lot stronger for the 26 year old from Venezuela had he pitched a better 2007 season in which he didn’t fare to well.

It’s well known that Rodriguez is entertaining thoughts of becoming a free agent after the 2008 season. MLB rumors are abound whether or not other teams will be interested in signing him if they know he is going to be shopping himself around. The answer to that would be yes because after all Major Leaue Baseball is big business. The interested teams are going to be thinking about what they are going to do to outbid another team, how much they are going to offer him and bottom-line – is he worth it.

Sport Tidbits:
Last night’s game against the Cleveland Indians, found Francisco Rodriguez with weak legs and it affected his fastball. He told the Los Angeles Times, “I might need to give it a couple of days.” He’s suffering from soreness in both of his ankles from one injury back in August when he landed on a hole on the pitcher’s mound and another injury from of all things, a minor fall in the dugout.

Gotta watch out for those dugout steps! See my previous post, Random Injury Places Navarro Out of Baseball Commission.

Potential Incriminating Roger Clemens Photos In Hands of the IRS

steroids-in-baseball.jpgRumor has it that two photos are in the hands of IRS agent Jeff Novitzy tying Roger Clemens to the 1998 Jose Canseco’s party that Clemens is alleged to have attended.

It is unknown at this point is whether or not the photographs of these baseball players are date and time stamped. Special Agent Novitzy is interested in speaking with Canseco regarding the photos. It is reported that an eleven-year old boy had separate pics taken of himself with the two Major League Baseball players at different times during the party.

The Daily News was the first to break the story of the alleged photographs back in February by the star baseball pitcher’s former trainer Brian McNamee’s attorney Richard Emery.

If the IRS special investigator does indeed have the photographs in his possession, it has the potential of becoming the lid that seals Clemens’ coffin in the BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co Op) steroids scandal. Clemens’ previously denied under oath that he attended his former Blue Jay’s teammates party and indulged in the use of the performance enhancers. Please see my previous post Roger Clemens Faces Potential Perjury Charges.

Jose Canseco has on file with Congress a sworn statement substantiating Roger Clemens denial of attending the now scandalous party and the MLB steriods scandal. Whether or not you feel this issue should be on the tip of everyone’s tongue’s, it surely is going to prove interesting.

Random Injury Places Dioner Navarro Out of Baseball Commission

dioner-navarro.jpgTampa Bay Rays catcher Dioner Navarro will be out for fifteen days on a random injury.

Friday night preceding the second inning against the New York Yankees, he tripped on the steps heading into the dugout.

In an attempt to brace his fall, Navarro grabbed on to the netting inside the dugout which resulted in a gash to his hand. The irony is the fact the netting is in place to prevent players from getting injured with foul balls.

Eight stitches later to his ring finger and four to his middle finger places Navarro out of baseball commission. At the time of this catcher’s injury, during the past three games, he had three hits out of nine at bats and one RBI. His stats for last baseball season placed him in 119 games with a .227 batting average, nine homeruns and forty-four RBI’s.

Navarro told reporters, “I almost threw up when I saw it,” The Tampa Bay catcher went on to say “I was like ‘Whoaaa.’ I didn’t know a piece of net could do this.”

In his absence, Triple-A Durham baseball player Mike DiFelice was called up to take his place and is anticipated to begin on Monday catching for the Rays.

All and all, Tampa Bay went on to win 6 to 3 over the Yankees.

Red Sox Greats

bostonredsox62.GIF

Written by H.A. Brempsell

The history of baseball changed with the added excellence of Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs, Cy Young, Luis Aparicio, Dennis Eckersley, Roger Clemens, Fred Lynn, Nomar Garciaparra, and Pedro Martinez. Even a die-hard Yankees fan like me must admit the extraordinary accomplishments of some of the finest players to have ever dug their cleats into Fenway Park’s turf. Let’s take a closer look into the historical realm of the greatest players to wear the official jersey of blood, sweat, and tears. It is necessary to pay homage to one of the best teams in American baseball.

First up is not only quite possibly the best hitter in baseball history, but also a remarkable U.S. Marine and fisherman, is Ted Williams, left fielder. This retired number 9 jersey wearing power hitter was nicknamed “The Splendid Splinter,” “The Kid,” “Teddy Ballgame” and “The Thumper.” Since 1930, no one could hit .400 until 1941 when Williams first did. Now, no slugger yet has been able to hit over .400 again since Williams. Missing four seasons due to his U.S. Marine commitment, Williams’ batting average probably would have been even higher. The 521 home run hitter wrote six books about fishing and baseball, one named, The Science of Hitting; appropriately titled since Williams believed in practicing the art of batting.

Playing for the Red Sox from 1939 to 1942 and 1946 to 1960, this 1966 Hall of Fame Inductee (also featured in the Fishing Hall of Fame) won Most Valuable Player (MVP) twice. William’s artifacts in the National Baseball Hall of Fame include a ball hit by him for his 500th career homer on June 17, 1960, a ball signed by him and Dom DiMaggio, and his sunglasses.

With much respect to his passing in 2002 at 83 years old, both Boston and San Diego (his home town) named a tunnel and a freeway after Williams, The Ted William Tunnel and Ted Williams Parkway, respectively. The legend “Teddy Ballgame” will always be honored and remembered by his fans and will continue to remind us of the fun spirit in the ballgame itself.

Games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, RBIs and extra base hits:close behind Williams who succeeded him in left-field is Carl Yastrzemski, who was the leader for all. Yastrzemski is the only player to have played with one team for so long - wearing a now retired straight #8 jersey all the way through 23 years with the Red Sox (from 1961 to 1983).

Yastrzemski won seven Gold Glove Awards, “Yaz” found honorable presence in the 1989 Hall of Fame. Yastrzemski¡’s artifacts in the National Baseball Hall of Fame include his Gold Glove Award in 1971, his Triple Crown trophy 1967, and his Silver Bat for winning the American League batting title in 1963. As if all this wasn’t enough, he was an 18-time All-Star, too. Still devoted to the Red Sox today, Yaz is still much involved as a roving instructor.

Important to mention third is catcher, Carlton Fisk, catching more games (2,226) than anyone in history. Nicknamed “Pudge,” his number 27 jersey is also retired. A 24-year baseball player overall, Fisk played for the Red Sox in 1969 and from 1971 to 1980 then later the Chicago White Sox as number 72, also retired. Not only an outstanding catcher, during Fisk’s rookie season of1972, he was the first American League catcher to lead the league in triples when he hit nine of them. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 and chose to be represented by the Red Sox even though he played more with the White Sox.

Upon Fisk’s amazing career, there have been two dedications made to him in his honor. The first was the fourth foul pole at Fenway Park named the “Fisk Pole” where he landed his 12th-inning home run that won the 1965 World Series in Game 6 - one of the most memorable games in Major League history. The second was the life-size bronze statue of himself inside the U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

Up fourth is superstitiously successful, Wade Boggs, third baseman and twelve-time All Star. His excellence finally earned him into the Hall of Fame in 2005 since playing for the Red Sox from 1982 to 1992. From 1983 to 1989 Boggs scored at least 100 runs every season, just one of his any masterful hitting feats.

Fifth, but not forgotten is Cy Young, whose real name was Denton True Young. Cy was short for “Cyclone” because his fastball was faster than fast, evident by the destruction of nearby barns and fences as he practiced pitching. Young was a 1937 Hall of Famer for pitching with the Red Sox from 1901 to 1908. His artifact in the National Baseball Hall of Fame features his pipe and case. The annual award given to the best pitcher in each Major League was honorably named after him - the Cy Young Award.

Luis Aparicio, Venezuelan shortstop, follows. Nicknamed “Little Looey,” he played only a short time for the Red Sox from 1971 to 1973 and was later a 1984 Hall of Fame Inductee for nine Gold Glove Awards leading the American League in nine seasons with stolen bases. Aparicio was also a 10-time All-Star. Holding the shortstops career record, Aparicio retired in 1973 with the most games played, double plays and assists.

Pitcher, Dennis Eckersley, AKA “Eck” was inducted into the 2004 Hall of Fame six years after he played on and off for the Red Sox, from 1978 to 1984 and 1998. He had a 20 win season and a 50 save season in his career, thus becoming the first pitcher in Major League history to have both.

Although not National Baseball Hall of Famers - and last but not least - include Roger Clemens, Fred Lynn, Normar Garciaparra, and Pedro Martinez also have made a lasting impression in Red Sox history.

Pitcher, Roger Clemens, nicknamed “The Rocket,” played for the Red Sox from 1984 to 1996. He is only one of two pitchers that have thrown 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning Major League game. Now playing for the Houston Astros, does the Red Sox want him back? Of course, but he might not want to give up his relationship with the Astros, winning seven Cy Young Awards. A Hall of Fame position may be just around the pitcher’s plate for Clemens.

Fred Lynn, center fielder, played for the Red Sox from 1974 to 1980. This nine-time All Star was the first player to have won both the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season in 1975. With notable mention, although not as prestigious as the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Lynn was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.

The popular shortstop, Nomar Garciaparra, played for the Red Sox from 1994-2004. He was talented enough to put a stop to John Valentin’s position as short in 1994. In his rookie year alone he had 30 home runs, batted in 98 runs, led the league in hits, and was second in extra-base hits.

An early career speed of 95 miles per hour led Pedro Martinez, to win three Cy Young awards. Although his speed has since then slowed down he is still a pitcher with a myriad of professional and dominating techniques. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Martinez played for the Red Sox from 1998 to 2004 and is only one of ten Red Sox pitchers that have had 100 or more wins.

There you have it - eleven reasons to celebrate the success of Boston’s best baseball heroes known as the all-time Red Sox Greats. Even if not everyone may be a Red Sox fan, theres no denying it; we all bleed red.

Little Miss SoCal would like to add the twelfth reason to celebrate the Boston Red Sox best baseball heroes: Babe Ruth. He was signed to the Boston Red Sox when he was only 19 years old and became one of the most celebrated athletes of all time.

Babe Ruth will always be known as one of the greatest baseball hitters ever to enter the world of Major League Baseball.
